Vehicle Description 1968 Pontiac Firebird Coupe In 1968 and 1969, Pontiac engineers were busy with a project to get the Firebird Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) ready, which led to the development of the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
Known as PFST, (Pontiac Firebird Sprint Turismo), the racing prototype was developed largely by chassis whiz Herb Adams.
Powered initially by the ohc six, the PFST project also served as test bed for a small-block, (303-cid), V-8, with special tunnel-port cylinder heads.
But development problems axed the small-block engine, so a Special Projects committee, (including Adams, chief engineer Bill Collins, product planner Ben Harrison, and merchandising master Jim Wagner), turned instead to a potent Firebird with Ram Air 400 V-8 and PFST-type chassis tuning.
For consignment, a 1968 Firebird that has a respray in white, and an updated interior, also in white.
This car has a 350ci V8, with a 4-barrel carburetor, and a Hurst shifted Muncie 420 4-speed manual transmission.
Exterior Leading the way are the two horizontal grille openings now blackened, and either side has dual headlights in either corner.
The beak is splitting the two sides of this grille and it carries over to the top of the hood.
Below is a black chin spoiler.
Dual scoops for this white hood with slightly inconsistent gaps.
The quarters and doors have a body crease to add to the design in the mid-section.
3 chrome vertical bars are attached to the front of the rear wheel wells.
There is plenty of body filler on the rocker areas, particularly near the edges of the wheel well bottoms.
On the back a spoiler is attached to the trunk lid, and tail lighting for this car is in horizontal bars with the rear pan.
Sunburst gold 17 inch 5 spoke Hurst wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior Opening the door we see the low back vinyl buckets and a bench in back sports the same patterns and white color.
For the sloped in dash, it has a black top and white respray for the front panels.
Within are the deep set circular instruments for the driver and a glovebox for the passenger.
A black center panel has been retained and this houses the temp sliders and wood applique edged radio.
Below the dash are dual aftermarket gauges in a black panel just above the center console.
A shout out to that which is now housing a Hurst shifter, and some nice wood veneer trimmed in thin chrome moldings at the edges.
Eyeball vents are on each corner of the dash.
Black carpeting is on the floors, and a black headliner is now above.
Drivetrain Our consigner states that this engine has a WX code block and is in 350ci V8 form.
It has a 4-barrel carburetor on top, and in back a 4-speed manual Muncie M20.
The rear axle is a 10 bolt.
Undercarriage Mainly rust free with areas of spray on rustproofing that is thick and thin depending on where you are looking.
I can view the rocker damage front thee inside as well with some body filler repairs.
Drive-Ability I fought with this car a bit on the test drive.
It fires right up and has good acceleration and handling.
However, the wipers were inoperable, the driver's visor will not stay up, there is an exhaust leak despite the system looking newer, braking was scary as there was nearly none and it pulled to the left during regular driving.
Also, no brake lights, taillights, or reverse lights.
A white respray, a white updated interior, and a 350ci V8.
A few frowns here and there but with the Hurst wheels it shows nicely.
