Vehicle Description 1930 Ford Model A Roadster In 1927 feeling the heat from his competition, and after a long run with the Model T, Henry Ford reluctantly retooled his assembly line, changed some of his manufacturing processes, and the Model A was born.
Eventually it would become wildly popular, outselling the Model T, and offered in 9 different body styles.
This unmolested 1930 Ford Model A Roadster was the beneficiary of an older restoration of sorts and is shown in worn condition.
With some faults, a nice color combination, a new distributor and wiring, newer rear shocks, but all Henry steel this better than barn find Model A is a blank canvas that will allow your imagination to run wild.
Exterior A forest green hue covers the metal upper panels of this roadster.
Some areas of bubbling, prior repairs and poor paint preparation are noted, and the hinge to the cowled hood is showing some rust formations.
Contrasting black fenders make up the lower section of the car and mimic the condition of the body.
Black is painted on delicate looking wire wheels with their now cast-iron drum brakes in the centers and are set off with chrome hub caps.
These are surrounded with Firestone blackwall thin tires, and a spare wheel and tire assembly is nested on the back just behind the rumble seat.
A dual period taillight set up and split dual bar chrome bumpers frame this spare and for the front of the car, vented metal side panels that fold upward to reveal the engine compartment.
A nice grille, topped with a chromed cap is flanked by 2 oversized headlamps, an original chromed front bumper, and an ahooga style horn.
A cream canvas convertible top is on but is in worn condition and we didn't risk putting it up for fear of disintegration.
Interior Brown colored vinyl covers a bench seat and is slightly loose and has black tape covering rips on the driver's lower cushion.
The flooring is made up of a mix of wood and black painted steel and is holding up well.
Up front, the metal dash, also in black has a centrally located mask style chromed instrument cluster, which shows original gauges.
A period style extra large steering wheel, tall shift lever, as well as a handbrake can be seen in the compartment.
White steel makes up the door panels and the rear side panels are covered in red vinyl.
Drivetrain Under the cowled hood is a 201ci 4-cylinder engine that runs decently.
Not in perfect condition, with some surface rust and black paint surrounding the engine a bit chipped especially on the firewall.
A 3-speed sliding gear manual transmission is bolted to the back and way in the back, the rear axle weighs in with a 3.
78 ratio.
Also in lieu of the generator, an alternator has been installed.
Undercarriage A solid steel black frame gives support to the wooden and stamped steel flooring.
Overall the flooring is good but the stamped steel section is showing invasive rust in a few areas.
The body hangers and underside of the running boards are solid with only minor surface rust and patina present.
Transverse leaf springs are on all 4 corners and mechanical drum brakes as well.
A glass pack style muffler is installed.
Drive-Ability The highlight of this car despite its looks and condition, is definitely the drive-ability.
A made for touring in style of the roaring 20's, this car accelerates nicely, and actually runs along at speed, (45-50mph?), easily.
Shifting is smooth, and all seems tight and squeak free.
All functions are working as they should.
Reluctantly the time has come for someone else to take tender loving care of this 1930 Model A roadster.
