Vehicle Description 1953 Ford F350 Tow Truck Most of us, for obvious reasons, never want to see a wrecker.
It's not like you're calling one to get a ride home on Saturday night.
They are the unsung heroes of the trucking world, hauling off what's left of our beloved rides after an accident or a breakdown.
This life of hard labor is also why you rarely ever see an old wrecker that's in great shape.
Heck, you rarely see an old wrecker, period, because a lot of them simply wound up in the scrap heap after the end of their usable life.
For consignment an F350 Ford Chassis and drivetrain with a tow truck package on back.
A believed to be 2 owner truck in fully unrestored but working condition and it still retains its charm and battle scars from years of service.
The brakes have recently been gone through; however, the mechanicals are due for servicing before hauling hybrids to their charging station.
Lights are on in case of emergency, or you just want to be seen, and a cushioned push bar with padded bumpers in on the wide front bumper.
All in fine shape, almost ready for any wreck that may come along.
Exterior Save for the rubber bumpered and black steel pusher panel in front she's all F350 from 1953.
Bathed in what very well may be the original orange paint, it presents with varying degrees of fading and surface rust and is bedecked with a M&N Towing & Repair livery.
Its rust-peppered white V8 emblemed grille leads the way back to the Super Duty hood badging, flying goddess hood ornament badging, and a neat original appearing hood scoop.
A black diamond plate running board has been added for easier access to the cab, and this also serves as a mud flap to the front tires.
Big rig style side view mirrors are hanging off rusty chromed stanchions, and the top of the cab has the orange marker lighting as well as a clearance lights and chrome air horns all to be noticed when alongside the roads.
Here our F350 comes to an end and the tow truck takes over where we see a structure of solid steel bars which is mounted into the frame and housing a winch with strong surface rusted cables.
This twin boom assembly is by Manley and moves rearward and allows towing from another car's frame or anywhere you could attach the hook.
Also, there is a wheel dolly that can slip under the wheels of a disabled car and then lift to move to a desired location.
This could also be used to tow parking violators, or just move cars out of the way without an actual hookup.
Dual tires are on the back sporting deep dish black steel wheels and up front more black wheels with big rig style nut configuration on the hub.
We note a lug stud is broken off on the driver's front wheel.
The bed is lined with surface rusted steel, and on the back are some extra add ons for different types of recovery and towing.
Interior Again, stock Ford door panels in red steel with varying embossments, shiny trimmings, and cranks for the windows.
Inside we note a bench seat covered in Oxblood vinyl that is in good condition, amazingly not dirty as one would think and with no tearing.
The 1953 Ford dash is retained save for a tachometer, air pressure gauge, (more on this later), and a panel of added lighting switches on top of the steel dash in front of the driver.
A lightly soiled black rubber mat covers the floors, and the headliner is a taupe finished cardboard.
4 shifters rise from the rubber covered floor and include the main transmission shifter, shifter for the auxiliary 3 speed transmission and various PTO engagement levers.
Drivetrain A patinaed and believed original 239ci Flathead V8 is shoehorned into the engine bay and is fed by a 2bbl carburetor under the oil bath air cleaner assembly.
An onboard air compressor is bolted to the engine and is belt driven to feed the air over hydraulic brakes and air horns.
Patina and originality are seen throughout this bay, but all is complete.
There is a main 4-speed transmission on back and auxiliary 3-speed transmission, and this pushes plenty of power to a 5.
33 geared rear axle.
Undercarriage All structurally sound with a solid frame and floorboards and a coating of surface rust on just about every component.
Massive stacked leaf springs are on the dually rear, and upfront we see more leafs.
Air over hydraulic drum brakes are seen all around and have new wheel cylinders and a new master cylinder.
A single exhaust system is on with a Cherrybomb muffler to handle the exhale.
Drive-Ability This big F350 Ford lit right up, and after figuring out the lights it was off to our task, to pick up a test drive that had broken down on our test track.
She drives nicely, has smooth shifting, plenty of power, and good braking.
Sadly, our tow had been scarfed by another legit company, so we did not get to put the winch into action, but it does function well.
We were tempted to slide the wheel dolly under the boss' car and move it but eventually thought the better of it! A good driver and worker.
Here you can have a classic tow truck all in near perfect working condition, still unrestored and showing its scars, which by no means is a bad thing.
A great looker, as well as fully functional right out of 1953, but you would never think it.
Need a lift? Come on in and see for yourself this beauty and you can then confirm I'm not towing you along with this description.
