Vehicle Description 1972 GMC Sierra Pickup Although General Motors has been producing trucks for roughly as long as Ford has, they weren't called 'Silverado' or 'Sierra'.
In fact, both names have a significantly shorter history than Ford's F-Series.
The name 'Silverado' originally applied to a trim level on Chevrolet's C/K line of pickups starting in 1975.
The 'Sierra' name was applied slightly earlier to the luxury trim of GMC pickups, starting in 1972.
So the introductory year of the Sierra line is gracing our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall and with this truck you could say look it's a big rig, no it's a Sierra, no waitbut I digress.
Lots of big rig attributes with the cab exterior roof lighting, front bumper light stalks, antennas off of either side, running boards, mud flaps, and a diamond plate topped blue painted rear bumper framing the bottom of an etched with fighting locked antler bucks window sided bed cap.
Breaker 1-9, break.
Exterior Not your everyday roller-skate for this worker bee in the form of a 1972 first edition Sierra.
No ankle biters necessary as we have an original 1972 version only tricked out with some big rig eye candy.
The original grille leads the way but the buck stops here, (actually it does show up on the bed cap windows!), with a crossed grille trimming flanked by dual headlights.
The bumper has vertical rubber topped push bars in the center and presents shiny.
Vertical marker lighting tubes atop the corners of the bumper allow the driver to know exactly where his front end is when maneuvering in tight spaces.
Steel is all straight and rust free, and is bathed in two tone medium blue and pure white.
The cab exterior starts on top with the white, then changes over to the blue for the hood and upper beltline length, then back to white for the centers and then after a black plastic wide trimming more blue for the rockers running the length.
On the cab are some big rig styled roof clearance lighting.
Chromed large mirrors hang off of either door and the driver's side sports a CB antenna.
The bed cap is aluminum and is similar to the exterior in color scheme but with the etched fighting bucks in the bubble windows.
A diamond plated rear bumper painted in body matching blue is seen under the rear cap door and tailgate.
The bed is carpeted and has a spare tire within it.
Standard GMC bolt on styled wheel coverings with GMC badged hubs are on each corner.
I'm keeping it at double nickel for this review! Interior Doors panels are in blue with a central wood applique panel which shows some wear at the actuators.
A bench seat in a multitude of vinyl designs, mainly lighter blue tuck and roll upper back panels, darker blue stitched vertical panels for inserts, and a Sheridan carved darker blue bordering of vinyl frames the inserts before it goes to full blown lighter blue smooth vinyl bolsters.
The blue dash is looking clean and easy, and there is blue where the black instrument bezel once was, which is all clean and green (well blue).
Round blackface gauges are in front of a factory blue wheel and the dash has climate sliders as well as an aftermarket stereo, and a CB hanging below the dash.
Gray carpeting slightly soiled is on the floor, and on back some handmade curtains, (done by the wife), hang from the rear glass.
Drivetrain A flip of the hood shows an unrestored truck like engine bay.
This has plenty of dirt, patina and some grease floating around at various spots.
In the middle is the moment shot in a correct 350ci V8, fed by a 4-barrel carb and a TH350 3-speed automatic on back.
The rear axe is a 12 bolt version.
I'm dropping the hammer down good buddy.
Undercarriage Plenty of surface rust, wet grease spotting and framework is seen under this truck.
All the are surface rusted but structurally sound.
Suspension is independent coil springs for the front, and a swing arm with coil springs for the rear.
Power disc brakes are in front and power drums for the back.
I did notice a crushed muffler.
Drive-Ability I slipped inside and felt like I was at home with the handmade curtains, CB radio, Sheridan styled seats and the truck accenting is killer kitsch.
The truck ran fab, and all qualities within were working swimmingly together to propel me down the interstate.
A Protecto-Plate and plenty of receipts keep this truck in order and gives us the ability to see see some of its history.
Grab a cool drink, to cover that passenger's seat, and head in out, maybe stopping for a 10-100, or taking care of heavier business at the choke and puke.
