Vehicle Description 1937 Ford Model 78 5-window Coupe In March of 1937, U.
S.
Steel raised their workers' wages to $5.
00 a day.
In that same month, Quaker Oats let the public know Babe Ruth receives $25,000 per year to be a spokesman for the brand.
Later that year, the Hindenburg exploded in Lakehurst, New Jersey.
In 1937, the Golden Gate bridge opened to vehicular traffic.
And with all of this going on, you could have been happily cruising around in your '37 Ford! For consignment, an updated and custom version of the cars of yesteryear.
The design of the 1937 Ford Model 78 5 window coupe lends itself to customizing and hot-roddingand we have a very nice example here.
This is somebody's vision come-to-life and the individual touches we see on this car may be unique to this individual build.
It's an attractive package that is much easier to buy than to buildSo open that door and slide in and let the good times roll! Note:
This vehicle is sold with a Pennsylvania reconstructed branding on the title Exterior Looking at the profile of this car, especially lowered onto its 15-inch American Racing Wheels makes it clear why these are popular.
It's got the right proportions and curves, a rounded roof line that is repeated by the fenders, trunk, and even the nose.
And in this black cherry paint it looks incredible, especially as that paint spills into the light bezels.
A monochromatic touch that gives the car a slightly sinister look.
The grille also shares the color and it's just a great look.
The painted flame stripe emanates from the hood vents and extends all the way to above the back fender.
It's a nice touch that breaks up the panels of black cherry just enough.
The little round external taillights have been replaced with flush-mounted rectangles that flank the license plate at the very bottom of the back.
The only thing lower are the exhaust tips which are also small rectangles.
The front and rear windows are trimmed in black instead of chrome to keep with the monochromatic theme.
The side mirror is present on the driver's side only and retains its gray billet color, the only thing light colored on this car along with the headlights themselves.
We note several imperfections in the paint, but overall a very nice presentation ready for show n' go! Interior A two-tone, split-back bench in a velour-like cloth dominates the cabin.
The diamond-stitched inserts are a nice touch and give an otherwise flat seat some texture and interest.
The door panels are also gray, a bit darker and showing in a berber cloth contain some billet handles for the crank windows and door actuators.
A modern-esque armrest is there along with mailbox-like numbers in 37 just in case people at car shows are wondering what year your car is.
The glossy, gray-painted dash has a billet surround for the VDO gauges, and a temperature gauge has been added below the dash.
A B&M shifter sits high in the center and racing pedals complete the hot rod look.
The gray carpet looks good, and the headliner is a bit saggy.
Keeping it in the Ford family, the steering wheel and column are from a mid-80's Thunderbird.
The trunk is carpeted and roomy and also reminds onlookers that this is from 1937 with some tasteful embroidery.
Drivetrain Common amongst hotrodders, we leave the Ford family for the powerplantin this case a consigner-stated 327ci Chevrolet V8.
It's topped with an Edelbrock intake and a 4-barrel Holley carb.
Ribbed valve covers are coupled with a matching air cleaner lid and oil fill cap.
The 3-speed TH350 transmission does the automatic shifting for you and sends the power to the 12 bolt rear axle.
All that comes to a halt via power disc brakes all around.
Undercarriage If this car rolled over a floor camera at one of those fancy auctions, it wouldn't win any prizes.
But in this case, that's a good thing.
This car is meant to be driven and it has all the qualities of a driver underneath.
Headers lead to true dual exhaust which is routed under the X-frame and into two low-profile Flowmaster mufflers.
The power brake booster unit is under here too.
This ol' Ford benefits from a Mustang II front end, a common and reliable modification along with leaf springs out back.
Some minor seepage and some surface rust are noted, but otherwise things are in fine condition.
Drive-ability There's really nothing quite like a true dual-exhaust car and this one does not disappoint with a quality sound electric cars can only hope to replicated by computer.
There's also a feel to itthe car rumbled underfoot and if that doesn't excite you, check your pulse.
Though the tires vary in size hotrod-style, (205/60/15 in front, 235/70/15 in back), the car rides level.
Visibility is good and as much as we're used to passenger side mirrors, (which did not become standard until the 60's), the lack of one here is no big deal.
The V8 moved this car very well and facilitated an experience that can be described in three letters; F-U-N.
If you don't get the hot rod thing, this car is a testament to their appeal.
Power steering is a welcome addition to this ride and we had a hard time returning to base.
But all good things must come to an end.
A driver quality 5 window coupe that you might even consider driving on daily errands for a little extra boost in your day! While there is no A/C or radio, this car is comfortable, attractive, and powerfula wonderful alternative to modern day cookie-cut cars on a nice day.
Why not? Have funand if you get a thumbs-up or two along the way, even better.
Just take a look at the shape and imagine it in your garage.
