Vehicle Description 1971 Ford Torino GT Convertible The car was named after the city of Turin, (Torino, in Italian), considered the Italian Detroit.
The Torino was initially an upscale variation of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane, which Ford produced between 1962 and 1970.
For consignment, a Torino from 1971 in GT trim.
Plenty of work has been performed on this 1 owner car with a 1999 restoration by Roy Kreider's body shop.
Our consigner has also had many replacements done in the last 3 years to bring everything up to snuff.
Plus this GT is a convertible! Exterior With straight steel panels bathed in Gray Gold Metallic with well minded gaps seen throughout between these panels, there are a few encounters with various objects that show some scratches, dents and dings.
No rust through to speak of.
The body has extra long front and rear quarters and these have a nice crease in the center adding some shape to the sides.
Dual headlights are on the edges of a split egg crate grille.
The hood has a dual opening scoop in the center.
Chrome and brite-work is excellent and all original badging is attached.
A lower black rocker runs between the wheel wells.
The black canvas top is in good condition, but the pump to raise it and lower it are not working, but this task can still be performed manually.
14-inch Magnum 500 wheels are on with staggered rubber, the rears being slightly larger in their raised white letter BFG radial T/A format.
Interior Wonderful early '70's black vinyl textured tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters are on for the high back seats.
For their uppers we see smooth vinyl with some stitched square pattern panels and square buttons at their intersections.
No headrests, just molded in stitched smooth vinyl.
A rear bench with the same pattern is stretching from B pillar to B pillar.
The door panels and steering column are also black.
Black carpeting floods the floors and shows as faded to a pinkish orange in areas.
Upfront, a padded black vinyl dash top is on and it shows a small crack.
It forms a shallow visor for the instruments that have a yellow painted edge and standard Ford rectangular instruments and gauges.
Below is a horizontal bar which holds the radio, and various knobs and pulls.
Fronting the dash is a factory wheel.
In the center between the buckets is a thin black vinyl console.
It has some aluminum in brushed and shiny finish, houses the T styled chrome shifter and curves up under the dash where it ends.
Drivetrain Under the hood with a clean engine bay and shiny engine and bolt ons we see a 351ci Cleveland V8.
It is original to the car and has 300 horsepower.
On top is a 4-barrel carburetor, and on back is a C6 3 speed automatic.
The rear axle has a Ford 9 inch pumpkin in the center.
Exhaust is dual piped and there are glasspack style mufflers.
This engine was completely rebuilt in 2021.
Undercarriage A new fuel tank and some slight surface rust and patina in the floor pans is noted.
On the driver's rear quarter at the ending edge is an area of invasive rust on the inner panel.
Power disc brakes are on front, and power drum brakes are on back.
Independent front and leaf spring rear suspension are on from the factory.
New rear springs are from 2020, and new front shocks from 2019.
Drive-Ability Slipping inside I took this one out for a long cruise and it was a great experience.
There is plenty of power which goes and goes to the point where I was wondering where it all came fromthen I remembered all the rebuild this consignor did, and every little bit helped with overall performance, and an engine purring like a kitten.
Also, a good corner turner does not hurt! The top motor does not work but runs, I had to jiggle the shifter for the reverse lights to work, the fuel gauge is not functioning, as is the temperature gauge.
A clean well-kept car, this 1999 exterior restoration still holds up well.
The top is like new but needs to be manually operated.
A recent engine rebuild and a clean original interior are just a few of the plusses for this nifty 1971 example from the blue oval.
